The Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus) is a small Sunbird which are widely distributed from West Asia through Indian Subcontinent into Southeast Asia.

Information

  • Like other sunbirds they feed mainly on nectar but also take insects and fruits. They are fast and can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird and are often rest on the base of flowers.
  • They are mainly found in southern India and up to Himalayas. It is found in thin forest and garden land area. They are seen in pairs or small groups in garden with suitable flowers.
  • The males are glossy metallic purplish black on the upper parts with the wings appearing dark brown. There is area with bright blue on the shoulder of males. Females are olive above and yellowish below. The outer tail feathers are tip in white for both male and female.
