Red Fort is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist places in Delhi. It is a World Heritage Monument also known as “Lal Qila” or "Qila-i-Mubarak" locally. It is the symbol of the city and was the residence of the Mughal emperor of India for nearly 200 year.

Red Fort was constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan during 1639-48, it took 9 years and 3 months to complete it under the supervision of master builders Hamid and Ahmed. Shah Jahan developed the seventh city of Delhi and called it Shahjahanabad, the present-day old Delhi and made it his capital in 1649.

We visited this place on our trip to North India and had a fascinating experience in looking at craftsmanship of 17th century and also recalling a part of old-fashioned Indian history.

Just after the Lahore Gate, there is a passage covering a busy market of handicrafts, called Chhatta Chowk, where silk, jewellery and other items for the imperial household were sold during the Mughal period.
